Mercy, Justice, and Les Mis (Archived Post)

On Divine Mercy Sunday this year (April 3, 2016), my co-worker Lucas Sykes (Resident Director of Newman Hall) and I gave a talk on the themes of Mercy and Justice in Les Miserables.  The format of the talk was an informal discussion.  A simple recording was made using a cell phone, which was made into this video:

To promote the event, and also because it was a whole lot of fun, we made this video:

  2. Great talk!

It was a nice refresher on what mercy and justice actually are and how they relate to one another. Throughout the year of mercy, I've been encouraged to do the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, but without an understanding of what mercy is, they are simply good actions.

As I continue to do works of mercy, I can reflect that the person's needs are being fulfilled, that their humanity is recognized. That will help me focus on the person in need, and not my personal experience and feelings while I serve others.
